About Enrollment

Students who register (pay fees) and later find they are unable to attend UCR may cancel registration prior to the first day of classes and receive a refund of fees by addressing a letter to the Office of the Registrar, 2249 Student Services Building, Riverside, CA 92521-0118. Letters can be delivered in person to the Highlander One Stop Shop (HOSS) on the first floor of the Student Services Building. Fees eligible for refund are the Student Services Fee, educational fee, and UCR campus-based fees listed in this schedule. For new undergraduate students, the Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) fee is not refunded. Beginning the first day of instruction, students who find they are unable to attend UCR must formally withdraw from the university.

From Classes

When students drop a course after the second week of instruction, a "W" appears on the transcript, indicating withdrawal from that course. Students are allowed to withdraw from a course during the third to sixth weeks of instruction, by using the enrollment adjustment procedures.

From the University

After the sixth week of instruction, students who find that they are unable to complete their course work may want to consider withdrawal from the university.

Students may withdraw from the university at any time prior to the end of instruction by completing the Undergraduate Application for Withdrawal at MyForms.ucr.edu.

Beginning the first day of instruction, students may initiate withdrawal from the university using the official Notice of Withdrawal form.

College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (CHASS) and Bourns College of Engineering (BCOE) students who are currently enrolled at UCR can submit an Undergraduate Withdrawal form at MyForms.ucr.edu to withdraw from the University (this withdraws the student from all current classes). College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences (CNAS) and School of Business Administration (SoBA) students who wish to withdraw from the university should first schedule a meeting with their advisor.

Graduate students may receive the official Notice of Withdrawal form from the Graduate Division.

Students may also initiate withdrawal orally or by e-mail. In the latter case, the dean's office or Graduate Division will prepare the paperwork. Students should check with the Financial Aid office before deciding to withdraw. Refunds are based on the schedule below and refer to calendar days. The effective date for determining a refund of fees is the date the student files an official notice of withdrawal with the university. Fees eligible for refund are the Student Services Fee, educational fee, and UCR campus-based fees listed in the Fee Chart.

Based upon the need of academic departments to purchase the supplies, materials, and services necessary to maintain instructional quality in advance of actual instruction, the Course Materials and Services Fee associated with the course a student is enrolled in is non-refundable after the 1st day of instruction.

For undergraduate and graduate students, the health insurance premium is not refunded after the first day of instruction, unless the student enters the Armed Forces and requests a pro rata refund from the Campus Health Center. Contact Student Health Insurance, (951) 827-5683, for details on insurance benefits after the date of withdrawal.

For medical school students the Disability Insurance fee, collected fall quarter only, is not refunded unless the student requests a pro rata refund when withdrawing from UCR. Contact the Biomedical Sciences Program Counselor, (951) 827-4333, for information about the refund or any insurance benefits after withdrawal.

Financial Aid

New students receiving Title IV federal financial aid who withdraw during their first quarter at UCR will receive a pro rata refund if they withdraw by the end of the sixth week of the quarter.

If students withdraw during a quarter, federal regulations require UCR to calculate the amount of federal financial aid earned for the period attended. If they withdraw prior to completing 60% of the quarter, a pro rata portion of aid must be returned to the federal government. Any portion of unearned aid that must be returned to federal aid programs by UCR will be deducted from the amount of tuition and fees and/or institutional refund. If the amount UCR must return to federal aid programs exceeds the amount of the institutional refund, a billing to the student account may be required.

Note For additional information, check Financial Aid.
